The following press release is based on how Katy Murrell went from back pain sufferer to a chilled out Yogi!
Dorset Yoga teacher Katy Murrell has a story of transformation after suffering a chronic back injury in the late eighties. She had recently been divorced and her two teenage daughters were about to leave home. She has never been able to put her back problem down to one thing – lifting, bending, on-going stress / depression and/or overdoing Yoga practice!
An x-ray showed an acute muscular strain. Barely able to walk, Katy was prescribed painkillers, Physiotherapy and sick leave from work. She had practiced Yoga for some years and found the Physio exercises very similar, but without breathing or relaxation. She practiced the recommended exercises regularly but in a more, what she calls ‘Yogic way' – incorporating breathing, relaxation and meditation.
Katy also embarked on a course of Shiatsu treatments, which she found complimented gentle Yoga and relaxation well. She immersed herself in self-help books, which led to big changes in her way of thinking and feeling. The healing process took on leaps and bounds and she started living again – physically stronger, and her mind calmer with a more emotionally positive outlook.
Feeling immense gratitude for receiving the gift of healing, Katy wanted to pass this onto others. She was therefore inspired to take a teacher training course with the British Wheel of Yoga and also to train in Shiatsu with the Bristol School of Shiatsu. Some years later after qualifying she took a career change from Youth Worker & Counsellor to Yoga Teacher & Shiatsu Practitioner.
Katy comments “I feel very lucky to be able to say I love my work. I avoid stress because I practice what I teach! I feel my age [fifties] when I get out of bed in the mornings, but after twenty minutes of Yoga I am twenty-one again!”.
